The Korean War began on June 25th, 1950 when North Korea Peoples Army invaded South Korea. At the time the Soviet Union backed North Korea and was a democratic people’s republic and South Korea was a Republic influenced by the United States. This invasion was considered the first military action of the Cold War. The United States entered the war to liberate North Korea of communism, and to contain the expansion of the Soviet Union in the East.

The Korean War was relatively short but very gruesome and bloody. Nearly 5 million people died. A big majority of these casualties were civilians. This rate of civilian casualties was higher than both World War II’s and Vietnam’s.
